Chapter One: First Day Back
Chapter One: First Day Back
“AHHHHH! I’m going to be late!!”
It’s the first day of school and someone is running very late…
“Why did I push the snooze button?!… Stupid temptation to sleep late… Where the hell is my other shoe… Oh, there it is.”
A fifteen-year old girl hopped on one foot as she hastily put her other black shoe on. She then rushed over to her full-length mirror that hung on the back of her door to do her hair. Her fingers quickly, yet neatly from habit, braided her waist long platinum hair. Leaving a beautiful long braid down her back and long bangs on her forehead that almost hid her crystal blue eyes.
She wore her school uniform: a black skirt down to the knee and a white shirt under a buttoned up black vest with the Armed Militia emblem stitched on the top corner (a pair of white wings spread behind two crossed swords).
She smiled and winked at her reflection, “Yep, you’re definitely a beautiful girl!”
“Aria! Hurry up or you’ll be late for school!”
“Coming, mom!” she yelled back and reached forward, pulling her door open.
She ran down the stairs, two steps at a time, and entered the kitchen. Her mother had just placed a sandwich and soda into a brown paper bag. Aria’s mother had gray eyes and platinum hair that Aria had inherited. Her father was sitting at the kitchen table, face hidden behind a newspaper as always, sipping coffee. He had dark hair and Aria’s inherited blue eyes behind a pair of thin framed glasses.
Aria kissed her mother on the cheek and grabbed her lunch, “Thanks. Have you seen my bag anywhere?”
“It’s under the table. Won’t you sit for just a second and have something for breakfast?” Her mother said as she took a seat next to her husband.
“Ok, fine… make me even latter... There you are!” Aria muttered to herself while crawling under the table and found her bag. She got back up, stuffed her lunch into the shoulder bag. The teen then quickly devoured some toast, a glass of orange juice, and an apple. Right after she finished the fruit, a loud roar of an engine came from outside.
“Huh? That’s Rain. What’s she going here?” Aria said puzzled, “Ah, who cares, now I can get a ride! Bye mom, dad!” Aria then raced out the kitchen.
“Bye!” Aria’s mother shouted too late. “And what about you? Aren’t you late for work?” she added to her husband.
Checking his watch, he quickly stood from the table and kissed his wife’s cheek, “Gotta go, or I’ll be late,” before walking out.

Aria ran down to the sidewalk where a girl her age sat on a parked red motorcycle with the motor running. Rain had violet hair, which stuck out from under her matching red helmet with tinted shades. She too wore the same school uniform.
She raised the shades, revealing violet eyes that matched her hair, and looked at Aria as she came closer. Rain threw another helmet to her, “Hurry up Aria, or we’re going to be late.”
“Sorry, I overslept. But…why are you here and on this? I thought your mom didn’t let you take this to school,” Aria asked as she sat behind Rain and fastened the helmet over her head. Rain looked forward, lowering the visor of her helmet, as she revved up the engine, “I’m allowed to use this thing for emergencies, and this is definitely an emergency. Anyway, I knew you would be late too, so I decided to drop by. Okay, now hold on tight!”
She then took off the brake and sped off.
“How about Demon? How’s he getting to school?” Aria had to yell in Rain’s ear to be heard over the engine.
Rain increased their speed in anger, “That jerk turned off my alarm clock and then went with Seth to school. And you know how Seth gets chaperoned to school, I bet my brother’s loving it. That bastard…”
The cycle easily maneuvered in and out of traffic and Rain ignored the red lights due the seriousness of their situation.
“Where’s your weapon? I thought you owned that piece of killing steel,” Rain asked as they missed a moving car by a few inches.
“Yes, but I had to leave it in the armory locker for the summer; my mother doesn’t want me to bring it in the house,” Aria calmly replied as they passed the 75mph mark.
“That’s not smart, what if they’ve stolen it over the summer? Anyways, didn’t you hear the news? There were a couple of major battles during the summer and it looks like they’re getting closer to the city. If this keeps up, they might send the top students to fight this year,” Rain exclaimed, a hint of excitement in her voice.
“Lets just hope it won’t come to that,” Aria replied, not sharing her enthusiasm. “Hey, take a right here, it’ll take less time.”
“Right, shortcut!!” Rain yelled as she made a tight turn down an alley, the tires on her bike screeching loudly.
***
“Umm, Demon? Where’s Aria and you’re sister? They’re going to be late.”
A boy, about the same age as Aria and Rain, with dark brown hair and navy blue eyes asked a slightly taller boy with black hair and violet eyes. Both of them were wearing the boys’ school uniform (same as the girls, except with black pants).
“You asked me this already.” Demon sighed then grinned innocently, scratching the back of his head. “Well, I kinda ‘accidentally’ shut off my sis’ alarm clock and, well, Aria’s always late.”
He put an arm around the other boy’s shoulders, “Don’t worry Seth, my intuition tells me Rain will use her bike and I’m sure she’ll pick Aria up on the way. And trust me, on that bike of hers, she’ll get here in no time.”
“Why does my intuition tell me not to ever trust you?” Seth replied, allowing himself to be pulled by the other.
Demon burst out laughing as they both approached the school entrance. Above the two large doors was the school’s crest, bearing all three emblems of the school‘s different sections (Armed Militia, Navy, and Air Defense), and above that was a large sign reading: “Seyron High, Academy of War” in bold, fancy letters.
The bell rung throughout the school and all the students filled the halls as they moved toward the enormous Auditorium. Nearly 2,000 students filed neatly in front of the school staff, which sat on chairs on the large podium.
The students were divided into three colors depending on their sections; the ones that stand to the right of the podium, with the brown uniforms, were of the Air Defense; the ones in the middle, with the blue uniforms, were from the Navy division; and the ones at the far left, with the black uniforms, were the Armed Militia.
Seth looked over his shoulder at the rest of his schoolmates, but didn’t see any signs of Aria or Rain. “They are going to be in so much trouble,” he thought before his attention was brought back to the podium.
“Attention!”
The noise of the whole school suddenly stiffening all at once echoed though the hall. The principal had risen and moved behind the microphone, he was about to speak when Aria and Rain suddenly burst through the side door at the right, next to the Air Defense students. The principal didn’t look pleased as they both had to walk to the other side of the auditorium to get to their positions. They were both sweating and slightly panting, as if they had ran at top speed to get here, but they managed to stand at attention as the headmaster started his speech.
“Welcome to a new year at Seyron High, Academy of War. For the newcomers and for the elder students to remember, this is a school of military training as well as education. We are famous for producing the finest soldiers and leaders of this time. Here you will learn honor, leadership, punctuation…” at this his eyes flickered on Aria and Rain, but the two girls didn’t even blink, “…and most of all, discipline.”
He paused for a moment, the entire student body silent, “You all know that war with the enemy is just around the corner; that this is only a temporary peace, like so many others in the past, right before the fighting breaks out again in full force. So I hope you young people will work hard this year, conduct yourself respectfully, and bring honor to this facility and your country.”
He saluted at the end of his speech and the students saluted back, the noise bouncing off the walls.
“I wish you all a good day, but before you head out and begin your first day, I would like to ask Misses Rain C. Ashcroft and Aria Kain to please report to my office for disciplinary punishment for being late…again.”
This time both girls flinched at the mention of their names.
“Dismissed!”
